The Principle and Adjustment Methods of Coffee Grinder Settings

February 21, 2025

The grind size of a coffee grinder is adjusted by rotating a dial or adjustment ring to change the distance between the burrs. This process is similar to climbing stairs: when the burrs are fully closed, it is the “zero point” (first floor). As the grind setting increases, the burrs move further apart, producing coarser grounds suitable for different brewing methods.

Adjustment Methods

1Zpresso manual coffee grinders use three types of adjustment mechanisms: internal adjustment, top adjustment, and external adjustment.

  • Internal and top adjustments require resetting to zero before changing settings, similar to climbing stairs—if the setting is forgotten, users can return to the starting point.
  • External adjustment is more intuitive, like taking an elevator—users simply rotate the adjustment ring to match the red dot with the desired number, eliminating the need for a reset.

Impact of Micro-Adjustments

The precision of grind size adjustment affects the final coffee flavor. A finer adjustment mechanism allows for more control over the grind. For example, within the same range, the Q grinder has 30 steps per adjustment cycle, while the X-Pro has 60 steps, offering a broader spectrum of grind settings.
Choosing the right adjustment method ensures better control over coffee grinding, enhancing the brewing experience.
